So I dusted off my N64 and have been playing an old favorite that I never actually beat, Donkey Kong 64. A staple of my childhood, this game was great and I played a whole lot of it. To the point that I remember all of it vividly now that I’ve gone back to play it. I never conquered this gem is because in order to beat the game you have to best a series of original Donkey Kong levels. However, I am determined to defeat it this time around and will keep posting on my progress. Right now I only have two bosses down and 4/5 of the Kongs, the only one I’m missing is Chunky.
I’ve also been messing around with Secret of Mana on the SNES. This game is great. Like, really impressive for the time it was made. I remember playing Sword of Mana, which I believe was on the GBA, and it is very similar. Apparently you can do coop but I haven’t gotten to that point yet. The cool thing about this game is that as you level up your character you also level up your weapons, and you get quite a selection. Just by playing with the sword you level it up and improve your sword handling abilities.
Most games that have RPG mechanics on the SNES have you in menus and fighting enemies in a turn based scenario. Secret of Mana is almost like a Legend of Zelda where you’re leveling up the weapons you obtain. I’ve only just gotten into it but it seems quite solid, and if the GBA one I played is any indicator I will be playing a lot more.
If you’ve played any good retro games lately or are planning to, post them in the comments below. Also let me know if there’s a game you’d like to hear/see more about. I’m always happy to check out new games.
